The Institute of Physics (IOP) is a leading international professional body and learned society, established to promote the advancement and dissemination of knowledge and education in the science of physics, pure and applied.

Although the majority of IOP members are based in the UK and Ireland, a significant proportion live and work in other countries around the world. Therefore, the IOP has close links with other physical societies, working with them to strengthen the role of physical societies generally.

As a major player in European and international organisations in physics and physics-related areas, the IOP aims both to represent British and Irish physicists in these organisations, and to help these organisations work effectively for the benefit of physics and physicists worldwide.
