Current Position
Tom Dickson is a Science Development Officer working within Fife Council. He has been training teachers in the Cognitive Acceleration though Science Education (CASE) initiative, both within Fife, and in other Councils and is additionally working with primary teachers using 'Lets Think', 'Lets Think through Science' and 'Concept Cartoons', as well as supporting the 5-14 science curriculum.

 

Career
Tom has taught in Fife for 28 years, the last 20 as Principal Teacher of Physics at Buckhaven High, and for the last year has been a full time science development officer.

 

Links with other Agencies
Tom is an active trainer in developments which apply psychology to learning and teaching, and as such he has liaised with many Councils over recent years. He has helped establish a network for trainers across Scotland in this field, as well as delivering workshops at conferences nationwide. He is also one of the facilitator/trainers for the Scottish Earth Science Education Unit, providing training in the Earth Science component of the 5 - 14 Science programme.

 

Personal Interests
Tom's personal interests include travel, particularly throughout France and Italy. He is an enthusiast for food, both cooking and consumption, and enjoys fine wine. When prompted he will admit to playing hockey still and 'even turned out for France and Germany veterans once when they were short of players through injury at an international veterans tournament'.

 

Aim/Mission
Tom's aim, using his experience in developing science teaching in the primary and secondary sectors, is to further support the teaching of science in primary schools and to enhance the transition experience of pupils from primary to secondary education. He will also be offering/supporting activities to bring specialist physics teachers together and helping new teachers and those who teach physics in the early secondary years without a secure background in the subject.
