Becoming Chartered by the Institute

Which Chartered Status is Right for Me?

This can be a tricky one to decide, although don't forget you can apply for all three if you are working in a suitable sector and have appropriate degree(s) and supporters- there is no limit to how many professional registers you can appear on.

  • If you have a physics degree and/or have been working in a clearly identifiable physics role for a period of time (see CPhys guidelines for more on the time periods required) then CPhys is for you.
  • If you have a physics degree and are still working in science, whether as an engineer or other scientist, educator, policy setter, lawyer or financier then CPhys is also very likely for you.
  • If you have a degree in physics or engineering and are working in a clearly identifiable engineering role, then you may wish to consider CEng as well as CPhys. Alternatively if you have no degree but have been working in engineering for many years, you may still be able to gain CEng through another route.
  • If you have a scientific degree and are working in a scientific sector, you may well be suitable for CSci. We believe CSci to be most useful to multi-disciplinary scientists.

If you are still unsure about which Chartered status to apply for contact the Professional Development Team for advice by calling 020 7470 4800 or email cpd@iop.org.
